YOUTH LEARN TO SKATE PROGRAM
CLASS DETAILS, TIME AND FEES:
Fee is $150/6 weeks or $26/week for remaining number of weeks.
Classes are on Saturdays from 11:45 am-12:45 pm beginning on 4/17/21.
- Skaters must be 6 years of age and up
- Total maximum capacity including all levels is 50
- Classes are for levels B1 (no physical assistance may be provided), B2, B3, B4, B5, B6
EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS:
All skaters under age 7 must bring their own helmet. Skaters should dress warmly and wear gloves/mittens.
As a Covid safety precaution, we strongly recommend bringing your own skates or contacting the Pro Shop in advance at 215-247-1759 ext. 16 to make an appointment in advance to lease skates. If your skater cannot provide their own skates, please indicate and provide skater’s sneaker size. Use of rental skates is included in the class fee.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The lesson is 30 minutes with 30 minutes of practice time staggered dependent on the skill level of the skater.
*Typically, lower-level skaters have their lesson first and practice afterwards, while higher level skaters will warm up first and have their lesson during the second half.
COVID PROTOCOL:
- To reduce maximum capacity limits inside the building, all registrations must be done online
- Masks are required at all times on and off the ice
- Limit to one parent allowed in the building
- Enter the rink no more than 20 minutes prior to the session and exit within 10 minutes after the session
- Skaters may use the chairs along the wall of the red entrance for tying skates. Only skater or parent may tie skates. Outdoor tent will also be available for skate tying.
Basic Skills Curriculum
The “basic skills” are the fundamentals of the sport. These six levels of the program introduce the fundamental moves: forward skating, backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, turns and Mohawks. Upon completion of the Basic 1- 6 levels, skaters will have a basic knowledge of the sport, enabling them to advance to more specialized areas of skating.
BASIC 1
Sit on ice & stand up, March forward across the ice, Forward two-foot glide, Dip, Forward swizzles – 6-8 in a row, Backward wiggles – 6-8 in a row, Snowplow stop, 2 Foot hop in place (optional)
BASIC 2
Scooter pushes – R & L, Forward one foot glides – R & L, Backward 2 foot glide, Rocking Horse (1 F swizzle, 1 back swizzle, repeat twice) Backward swizzles – 6 – 8 in a row, 2 foot turn from forward to backward in place, Moving snowplow stop, Curves
BASIC 3
Beginning forward stroking showing correct use of blade, Forward half swizzle pumps on circle – 6 – 8 consecutive clockwise & counterclockwise, Moving forward to backward 2 foot turns on a circle – clockwise & counterclockwise, Beginning backward 1 foot glides, Backward snowplow stops, Forward slalom, Forward pivots
BASIC 4
Forward outside edge on circle – R & L, Forward inside edge on a circle – R &L, Forward crossovers, clockwise & counterclockwise, Backward half swizzle pumps on circle, clockwise & counterclockwise, Backward 1 foot glides, Beginning 2 foot spin – up to two revolutions, Forward Lunges R & L
BASIC 5
Backward outside edge on circle – R & L, Backward inside edge on circle- R – L, Backward crossovers- clockwise & counterclockwise, Forward outside 3 turn R & L, Side toe hop R & L , Advanced 2 foot spin 4-6 revolutions, Hockey stop R & L
BASIC 6
Forward inside 3 turn – R & L, Moving backward to forward 2 foot turn on circle- clockwise & counterclockwise, backward stroking, beginning 1 foot spin- 2-4 revolutions w optional free leg position, T Stop – R & L, Bunny hop, Forward spiral on Straight line – R or L, Shoot the Duck – R or L
